Staying Healthy on Your Next Trip

March 14, 2025

No one wants to get sick while traveling! Staying healthy means taking a few simple steps to prevent and manage health risks—wherever you go.

Food Safety: “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!”

Some destinations have a higher risk of illnesses like hepatitis A or traveler’s diarrhea caused by contaminated food. Follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Always wash your hands before eating or preparing food. If soap and water aren’t available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Only eat foods that are well-cooked and served hot
  • Only eat fruits and vegetables (including salads) if you have washed them in safe water and peeled them yourself
  • Avoid ice cubes unless made from safe water
  • Drink only boiled water or commercially sealed bottled water
  • Brush your teeth with purified or bottled water

Before You Go

Travel Vaccines & Medication

Our travel-certified pharmacist, Melissa, can assess which vaccines and medications are recommended or required for entry to your destination. We recommend scheduling a consultation at least six weeks before departure. Common travel vaccinations may include: hepatitis A & B, typhoid, and yellow fever.

Pharmacy Checklist

  • Pain relievers (e.g. acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • Electrolyte tablets/powder (e.g., Gastrolyte) to prevent dehydration
  • Traveler’s diarrhea treatment (Pepto-Bismol or loperamide)
  • Sunscreen & bug spray
  • Blister patches for foot protection

Avoiding Sunburn & Bug Bites

  • Cover Up – Wear light-colored, loose clothing and closed-toe shoes
  • Sun Protection – Wear a hat with SPF and sunglasses with UV protection
  • Limit Sun Exposure – Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible, especially between 11 AM – 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest.
  • Use Sunscreen – Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours while outdoors. Don’t forget the back of your neck! Apply sunscreen before bug spray.
  • Use Bug Spray – Apply an approved insect repellent (look for Icaridin 20% or DEET 30%) on exposed skin. Always follow label instructions for reapplication and safe use, especially for children.
  • Protect Indoor Spaces – Ensure sleeping areas are enclosed to keep insects out.
